Types of Gate Automation We Install

Selecting the right gate opener depends on your driveway’s slope, the weight of the iron, and your usage frequency. We use commercial-grade equipment designed for longevity.

1. Sliding Gate Operators
Ideal for driveways with steep grades or limited space where a gate cannot swing inward.

Chain-Driven Systems: The most common and reliable choice for heavy wrought iron gates.
Rack & Pinion Gears: A quieter option often used for residential properties.
Dual-Gate Synchronization: For wide commercial entrances requiring two bi-parting gates.

2. Swing Gate Actuators
Perfect for flat driveways and creating a grand entrance aesthetic.

Articulated Arm Operators: Best for gates mounted on large pillars or columns.
Linear Actuators (Ram Arms): Sleek, screw-drive arms that mount directly to the gate and post.
Underground Operators: Invisible motors buried in a sub-grade foundation box for the cleanest look (highly recommended for ornamental ironwork).

Safety First: UL 325 Compliance

Automatic gates are heavy machinery. To ensure the safety of your family, pets, and vehicles, Kim Iron Works strictly adheres to UL 325 Safety Standards and ASTM F2200 codes. Every installation includes the required "Entrapment Protection" devices.

  • Photo Eye Sensors: Infrared beams that stop the gate immediately if a person or car breaks the beam.
  • Vehicle Loop Detectors: Magnetic sensors buried in the driveway that prevent the gate from closing on a vehicle while it is passing through.
  • Safety Edges: Pressure-sensitive bumpers that reverse the gate if it physically touches an obstruction.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Yes, in most cases. However, we must first perform a gate safety audit. The gate must have high-quality, ball-bearing hinges and swing or slide freely without dragging. If your current gate has structural sag or rust issues, we may need to perform iron repairs or replace the posts to handle the torque of a new motor.
  • You will never be trapped inside or locked out. All our modern gate operators come equipped with a Battery Backup System that allows the gate to cycle dozens of times during an outage. Additionally, every motor has a Manual Release Key that disconnects the drive mechanism, allowing you to push the gate open by hand.
  • Hardwired (AC Power) is always the superior choice for reliability, especially for gates that open frequently. Solar Gate Openers are an excellent alternative for long rural driveways where running trench conduit is too expensive. If you choose solar, we must ensure the panel has direct southern exposure and properly sized batteries for cloudy days.
  • A Swing Gate requires "stacking space" equal to the width of the gate leaf (plus 6-12 inches) inside your driveway. A Sliding Gate requires horizontal wall space alongside the fence line equal to the width of the driveway plus the "counterbalance" (usually 40% more length). We will survey your property to recommend the correct geometry and entity configuration for your specific lot.
